Decided to re-watch this 90's "classic" after reading an article I found via The Dissolve, in which Stanely Kubrick listed it among his all-time favorite films. No, take your time. Soak that little tidbit in. A movie about L.A. street-ball hustlers, starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, with a Rosie Perez supporting role, is among Kubrick's favorites. This is one of the most 90's movies ever made. Just look at that damn poster. Look at Wesley Snipes' fucking hat. That hat is so 90's, hipsters brought it back recently.
Look, I know it may sound like I don't like White Men Can't Jump. But, I do. It has a bevy of timeless humor, the chemistry between Snipes and Harrelson is… -

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The title is wrong because Woody Harrelson does do a jump at the end of the movie

Rewatched this one for the Next Picture Show podcast, as a pairing with Steven Soderbergh's High Flying Bird, and it plays so much better for me now than it did back in 1992. Back then, the racial tension felt exploitative and nerve-wracking to me —now it just seems daringly frank, especially since it isn't foregrounded or fatal, it isn't the center point of the movie or a great source of drama, it's just presented as a casual fact of life. The basketball sequences are also better than I remember, with Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson obviously doing a lot of their own playing and especially a lot of their own long-range free throws. The pacing of this movie is pretty…

When I moved out to California, I had nothing. No friends, no job, no home. I spent my days surfing and my nights sleeping in my jeep. I'd never been on my own before and for the first time in my life, I understood what loneliness was. Nearly every night, the ball in my stomach would knot up so tight, I'd panic, start my jeep, and point it homeward. After a few miles, I'd always talk myself out of it, pull over, and try to go back to sleep.
I was out scouting new surf spots late one afternoon and thought I'd check out the famous Venice Beach. On my way to the water, I noticed a basketball game happening…

Hop on into this time machine to the 90's and bask in it's glory. Back when you would gamble in the streets and the shit talk wasn't on twitter. Back when you could wear colorful clothing and no one would bat an eye. Back when Ken Jennings didn't ruin Jeopardy.
Full of Yo Momma jokes, Rosie Perez side boob, and Wesley and Woody throwin down on the court. I could watch this forever, it's a time capsule that keeps giving.

wrong title man. this needs to be called White BOYS Can't Jump. cause this is a deep dive into adolescence territory, the one of the pink/light blue pastel 90s, when rap was still hip hop and the hoops were still fresh. (okay. they actually still are.)
i grew up with this movie, and it came right around the time I digged into NBA basketball. in fact the bball scenes are still very enjoyable to watch nowadays, Shelton knows what he's doing in the sportfilm genre, and it surely helps to have a cinematography magician at your disposal in Russell Boyd.
this is a drifter and slacker. it's LA palms and old men singing cool tunes on the beach promenade. the…
